Tennis Takes Centre Court At TIFF
In case you_re going to have a movie a couple of famous tennis rivalry – specifically the Bjorn Borg-John McEnroe 1980 Wimbledon final – open TIFF this year, then why not have essentially the most-talked-about man in tennis in attendance
Denis Shapovalov, the 18-year-old Thornhill, Ont. sensation, fresh off his fourth round loss at the U.S. Open, turned up on the Borg/McEnroe red carpet on Thursday night at Roy Thomson Hall, along with stars Shia LaBeouf and Sverrir Gudnason, who play the brash American up-and-comer and the stoic Swedish champ, respectively.
_I_ve seen [TIFF] on TV, I_ve never actually been able to be part of it,_ Shapovalov told reporters.
_So it_s pretty cool to be here. Like I said, it_s my first time here. It_s just really cool, really surreal._
LaBeouf was the other big draw for autograph seekers and picture takers and he worked the group but didn_t walk the red carpet to do interviews.
So it was up to Gudnason to do the heavy lifting when it comes to talking to the press.
_I think they were the primary rock stars of tennis, those guys,_ he said of Borg and McEnroe.
_They were very different and so they were the most effective on the earth. That makes it very interesting. _
As for his transformation into Borg, it was really physical for him.
_I trained for half a year before the shoot, two hours each day with a pro coach, I did curl waves hair another physical work as well,_ he told reporters. _I had to look at all the stuff I could find about him. Like watch his matches, read books. I met [Borg] in Stockholm. He_s a very nice guy and he liked the movie._
Screenwriter Ronnie Sandahl says the important thing to writing Borg/McEnroe was showing what the players had in common.
_To me, it_s always been about the 2 top tennis players in the world that folks thought were essentially the most different, but in way, maybe they were more similar than people thought._
Even the American distributors Tim League and Tom Quinn of Neon showed up on the red carpet dressed as’80s era Borg and McEnroe, respectively, complete with wigs, tennis outfits and wooden racquets.
_This wig has been on John McEnroe, that wig has been on Bjorn Borg, so there’s actual DNA within the house tonight,_ said Quinn. _It was from a photo shoot they did years ago where they both kind of needed to travel back in time._
Along with Borg/McEnroe, TIFF also boasts other tennis movies like the Battle Of The Sexes in regards to the famous Bobby Riggs-Billie Jean King tennis match and an Andre Agassi documentary.
_I believe tennis, like any sport, can be a logo, an allegory for other things which might be happening on the earth,_ said Quinn of tennis having a moment at TIFF.
_These two individuals are very different in how they approach the identical discipline but for me and Tim, we_re in our 40s, and it_s like getting into travel in a time machine and going back and reliving our childhood. Coming here tonight in these outfits, it_s a total childhood dream. It_s ridiculous. I_m totally psyched we get to do that.
